While the rest of the city celebrates, your husband is still out working. While students and teachers are excited about the unexpected day off school because of the weather, your husband still heads out the door to his job.

Trash collections may not be the most glamorous job in the country, but it is a necessity that everyone relies on. In fact, at the same time that the news trailers are crossing the screen listing the schools that are not in session, they also report that city trash pickup will go on as scheduled. With a morning of flurries and wind, however, it is even more important that your husband wears his reflective pants for work, as will as the high visibility orange safety vest on top of his winer coat. Being warm is obviously important, but staying safe is even more essential.

Many careers require special safety gear and clothing. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specific guidelines in place to make sure that workers are a safe as possible. From trash collectors to road construction workers, there are many occupations that require people to work in dangerous setting where making sure you are visible is essential. Likewise, there are even more careers where it is important that workers wear the right kind of foot protection.
Consider some of these facts and figures about the safety wear that many people have to wear to work and the reasons that the problems they are trying to avoid:

  • A construction worker or laborer may walk more than 30,000, while the average person may only walk 10,000 steps a day.
  • An average of $70 is spent by every employee on foot protection for work every year.
  • A new employee in their first month at work has more than three times the risk for a lost-time injury than others, according to the Institute for Work and Health in Canada.
  • Workers who are 65 and older experienced, however, experienced 94.2 injuries per 10,000 full-time employees, less than any age group in 2014, according Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
  • 4,836 workers were killed on the job in the year 2015. This is equivalent to 13 deaths every day.
  • Wearing reflective pants for work and following other important safety guidelines can keep you safe while you are on the job.

Snow days may mean a fun day off for many people, but there are still many people who have to go to work no matter how bad the weather is. If you are someone who has to work in hazardous conditions, high visibility clothing is important.
