3 of the Most Controversial Shirts of All Time

Custom tee shirt

Some tee shirts are simply more iconic than others, beloved pieces of apparel that are instantaneously recognizable. Other shirts, though, are infamous. Here are just a few of the latter that you may remember from the news.

My Best Subjects.

Recently, kiddy apparel retailer The Children’s Place set feminism back a couple decades with its My Best Subject tee shirt. The shirt featured a list titled “My Best Subjects.” The four items included were shopping, music, dancing, and math. The problem? Each subject had a check box next to it to indicate what the best subjects were. Math’s box was left unchecked. Fortunately, the outrage over the shirt forced the retailer to pull it.

How to Catch an Illegal Immigrant.

Taco Cid, a Mexican restaurant in West Columbia, South Carolina, decided to make a little extra money selling some shirts on the side. Rather than simply sell shirts with the restaurant’s name and logo, they decided to design a graphic of a box held up by a stick with string tied to it. Two tacos were laid out as bait for the trap. The shirt also read “How to Catch an Illegal Immigrant,” just in case anyone missed the racist joke. Unfortunately, the owner was unapologetic when the community complained.

Kanye West’s $82 Alexander Wang Tee Shirt.

Kanye West is one of the world’s leading fashionistas, and has designed apparel that make boutiques look like they only carry cheap custom tee shirts. Ironically enough, if he’d actually worn one of these cheap custom tees when he visited Zuccotti Park back in 2011, he might not have gotten in trouble. Rather than choosing a cheap custom tee, he decided to pt for an $82 Alexander Wang shirt. The rest of his outfit actually added up to about $30,000, which is probably not the most appropriate thing to wear to a protest over the economic divide.
